WiFi QR Code Not Working? 12 Fixes for iPhone and Android

When a WiFi QR code is not working, the cause is almost always one of two things: the phone cannot read the code (glare, size, low contrast or scanning turned off), or it reads the code but the details inside do not match your router (wrong password, wrong network name or unescaped special characters). Start with the diagnosis table below, then work through the numbered fixes.

Why does the code scan but not connect?

1. Check the password and network name exactly. Both are case-sensitive: CafeMelati_Guest and cafemelati_guest are different networks. Compare the card with your router's settings character by character, and watch for extra spaces at the end. If someone changed the password recently, every old card stops working.
2. Escape special characters. The WiFi QR format is WIFI:T:WPA;S:name;P:password;;. If the name or password contains \ ; , : ", each one must have a backslash in front of it, otherwise the phone reads the wrong password. GuestNet escapes these automatically; some basic generators do not.
3. Handle hidden networks. If your guest network does not broadcast its name, the code needs a special hidden-network flag, and some phones still struggle. GuestNet cards do not set this flag, so turn on name broadcasting (SSID broadcast) for your guest network.
4. Check WPA3 compatibility. Older phones may not support WPA3. If your guest network is set to WPA3 only, switch it to WPA2/WPA3 mixed (transition) mode in the router, if available, so older devices can join too.

Why will the WiFi QR code not scan at all?

5. Turn on QR scanning in the camera. On iPhone (iOS 11 or later), QR detection is in the Camera settings and can be switched off. On Android, some camera apps have a "Scan QR codes" or Google Lens toggle in their settings.
6. Try Google Lens or a QR app on Android. Most Android phones on Android 10 or later handle WiFi QR codes through the Camera or Google Lens, but some older or less common models only show the raw text. Google Lens or a dedicated QR scanner app usually fixes this.
7. Remove glare. Glossy paper, lamination and glass frames reflect light. Tilt the card, move it away from spotlights, or reprint on matte paper or with a matte laminate.
8. Fix size, quiet zone and contrast. Print the QR at least 3 cm wide, keep a clear white border (the quiet zone) around it, and use a dark code on a light background. Avoid light-on-dark or low-contrast colour pairs. Print from the full-resolution file, not a screenshot or a photo of a screen.

What if the problem is the network itself?

9. Check the band and range. If the guest network is 5 GHz only, some older phones cannot see it, and 5 GHz has a shorter range through walls. Enable 2.4 GHz for the guest network, or place the card closer to the router or access point.
10. Check MAC filtering and randomisation. Modern phones use a random (private) MAC address for each network. If your router uses a MAC allow-list, new guests will be blocked. Guest networks usually should not use MAC filtering at all.
11. Check device limits. Some routers limit how many devices can join the guest network, and older ISP-supplied units can slow down when many devices connect. If your cafe is busy, check the limit in your router settings or ask your ISP (Unifi, Maxis, TIME, CelcomDigi and others) about suitable equipment.
12. Look for a captive portal. If your network shows a login or terms page, the QR code only gets the phone onto the WiFi; the portal still appears afterwards. If it does not pop up, open any website in the browser to trigger it.

How can I stop my WiFi QR code failing again?

Frequently asked questions

Why does my phone scan the WiFi QR code but not connect?

If the phone reads the code and offers to join but then fails, the details inside the code usually do not match the router. Check that the network name and password are exactly right, including capital letters, and that special characters were escaped.

Why does my iPhone camera not react to the QR code?

Check that the iPhone is on iOS 11 or later and that QR code scanning is turned on in the Camera settings. Then hold the phone steady about 15 to 30 cm from the code, in good light and without glare.

Can a WiFi QR code expire?

The code itself does not expire, but it stops working as soon as the network name or password changes on the router. When that happens, re-export the card with the new details and reprint it.

Will a WiFi QR code work with a captive portal?

The code can join the network, but guests will still see the login or terms page afterwards. If the page does not appear, ask the guest to open any website in their browser to trigger it.
